On Africa’s Roof, Still Crowned With Snow

Monday, January 21st, 2008

The New York Times travel section has taken on Kilimanjaro. It brought back fond memories of the climb that I did there two years ago, at about this time. The writer took the same route and is good for waxing nostalgic

On the Road Again

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

After two years of domestic trips, I am finally leaving the country again in December to travel in Africa. If you had told me when I started at BootsnAll that my next overseas destination would be Africa, I wouldn’ve said, “no way”. But after hearing about Kilimanjaro and South Africa from Donovan and Sean, I suddenly found myself booking a ticket.

I will be leaving Portland on Dec. 17 and heading first to Detroit (ick) and then onto Amsterdam where I will meet up with my sister, Abby. Abby is flying in from Chicago and has no international travel experience whatsoever. None. No 8-hour plane rides, no horror stories from stays in London hostels, no jet lag, no nothing. It should be an interesting experience, to say the least.

After a few hours in Amsterdam, we’re heading to Nairobi where I plan on taking us directly do the hotel. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. We’ll probably eat in the airport versus going out for food at 10 p.m. We plan on going on a safari for a few days before meeing up with Sean and Donovan and Donovan’s wife Carrie in Tanzania for Chistmas. Then it’s off to climb Kilimanjaro and hopefully summit! Once we return, Abby takes off for Europe where she’ll get her first introduction to solo travel in Paris Hostels or Hostels in Amstedam. I’ll be making my way to South Africa and spending the next month helping set up our office for South Africa Travel Guide!
