Do What You Love and Starve

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I came across this article today and it cracked me up, if only because of the title: Do What You Love and Starve

The hefty dose of cynicism aside, he actually makes some good points regarding how to make a career transition to ‘something you like’, although I’m still an optimist that you can do what you love AND eat well.

I’ve been very busy the past few months – I’ve been to New Caledonia, Fiji, LA, Minneapolis and Las Vegas since October and it’s looking to be a hectic start to the new year too. I’m writing travel guides and marketing the honeymoon registry, along with some writing on the side for MSN, thanks to a wonderful introduction from Leif at KillingBatteries a few months ago. These are all things I love and I’m not starving, so I’ll argue Kiplinger’s a little longer 🙂

What I’m Reading: Afghanistan, PINK and Google Advertising

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I don’t usually write about what I’m reading, but right now my plate is full of awesome randomness. Since I take the bus to and from work, I am trying to take advantage of this time by reading more.

For fiction, I just finished Kite Runner, which is a fantastic book that weaves in historical events in Afghanistan (the ones pre-2001 that most Amerians don’t read about). Recommended reading if only for the fact it gives an interesting insight into the culture…plus it is a pretty good story.

For magzines, I picked up a subscription to PINK Magazine, which is a women’s mag but has some great profiles, such as this one on Playboy president, Christie Hefner.

For online stuff, Tech Crunch has an interesting analysis on what’s up with Google’s new advertising foray: Digesting Google’s New PPA Advertising Product I don’t agree with everything he says – Linkshare and TradeDoubler and CJ will have to adapt but they will always appeal to some parts of the market – but yet again it shows the steps that Google is taking to control the online world.

So I'm heading back to Cali again this weekend - the northern part of the state this time. I've got a 6 a.m. flight on Saturday morning and one of my close friends of high school is getting hitched ... [Continue reading this entry]

Welcome to the South

Monday, May 22nd, 2006
A real quick story - Yesterday, when I flew through Houston, I stopped a Chili's to dish out $8 for a veggie burger. I asked for the burger and, after a few earnest re-iterations of what I wanted, was ... [Continue reading this entry]

White Shoes, Chilled Wines and Frutsticks

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006
Memorial Day is right around the corner, and with it, summer. Memorial Day always meant it was 'ok to wear white' in my family. I usually only possess a pair of white shoes (seeing as how my whites-never-stay-white), but last ... [Continue reading this entry]

Taste of the Nation, Bike Racing and Sun!

Monday, April 24th, 2006
As I mentioned previously, this weekend I completed my first ever stage race - the Willamette Valley Classic. My first 'sports goal for 2006' to get crossed off the list (now, for that half-ironman, half-marathon and crit...)! ... [Continue reading this entry]

Crab-Encrusted Fish

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006
One of my favorite foodie blogs, Je Mange la Ville, posted an awesome receipe for crab-encrusted fish today. Ever time I look at her blog, I promise myself that I'm going to cook more.  Like me, MLB is ... [Continue reading this entry]
