Omaha- Somewhere in Middle America

Monday, April 30th, 2007

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Omaha – a sprawling suburbian town with a cute, albeit very small, old town with cobblestone streets. Charlie and I ventured off to Middle America for 36 hours and the wedding of his pledge dad, a soccer coach who will be moving to Boise in two weeks with his new bride to start an assistant coaching position there.

There were a few highlights of trip, including the fact all of our flights took off and landed on time with no issues with transfers. However, I did have one issue with airport security…

The man in front of me was selected for special screening. After being walked and handed over to the agent at the machine, he walked through, as did I. The TSA agent who he had been handed off to began gathering up my items – and placed his boarding pass in the container. I looked at her, dumbfounded. “You do know that isn’t my boarding pass, don’t you?” I asked. She looked at the name and then me and my purse and set the bin right back down again. The man who was supposed to be searched was gathering up his stuff when the woman snapped at him that he wasn’t allowed to touch it and huffed off with his items without saying another word to me.

My, when a MALE is walked up to the machine and HANDED OFF to an agent…and then she gathers up MY stuff and places HIS boarding pass with it, I just feel so…secure.

February Fun

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

As promised – here’s my MSN link…The Best Thing About My City.

They liked the series so they’ve decided to make it an ongoing thing, which is exciting. Up next? The most overrated thing…anyone have suggestions on overrated Portland activities?

I’ve got some fun (domestic) trips planned – one to Omaha for a wedding (I love Omaha!) for 36 hours in April and then another in June to take on the scenery of Colorado for a killer climb-a-mountain-pass-every-day bike tour. Hmmm…now to just get myself ready for the challenge!

Safe and Sound in Boring Bratislava

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006
Bratislava gets a bad backpacker rap as a small, boring town with not much going on and an uninteresting old town. For many, it's merely a stopover from Vienna to Prague or Budapest. I skipped it for that ... [Continue reading this entry]

Getting Caught in the Budapest Anniversary Riots

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006
"Well, you see, 50 years ago today there was a revolution...." The man at the train station travel agency looks embarassed with his explanation. "So, what, they decided to have another one?" I ask, incredulous. The man shrugs. "Be careful. ... [Continue reading this entry]

Romania sucks. Well, not really, but right now it does. I have been here for less than 24 hours, almost got pickpockted twice and then was robbed when I was in the shower by my roommate who took 40 bucks ... [Continue reading this entry]

Er…Maybe I Will Stay in Albania Another Day After All (aka Touring Durres, Albania)

So, as I sat waiting for the bus this morning, I thought to myself, 'You know Court, you have not seen a lot of this area yet. You should really stick around another day...you know, take a day trip to ... [Continue reading this entry]

Goodbye to Albania

Thursday, October 12th, 2006
To continue my entry from last night... After I left the shop, I found a minibus heading to Tirana. The way these things work is that they leave when they are full or mostly full...which meant that you sometimes get ... [Continue reading this entry]
