Mweka Camp (3100 m/10,170 ft) to Mweka Gate (6,000 ft.)
Descent time: 4 hrs
Elevation change: -1250 m/-4101 ft
Estimated distance: 10km/6.21
Final elevation: 1828 m/6000 ft

Today we descend about 1400 meters (4,592′) through the forest on a jungle path for about 10 km (6.2 miles) in 3-4 hours to reach Mweka Gate by mid-afternoon.

We were up and out of camp an hour earlier than we had to be this morning – people were ready to get off the mountain. A bunch of us rushed down, only to have to sit for a few hours and wait for people, eat lunch and generally feel more and more miserable sitting in the blazing sun.

Most of us were looking worse for wear by the time we got to leave. I took a freezing cold shower, but was just thankful for the running water. Dinner that night was at an Indian restaurant and most people were in good spirits, although a majority felt pretty sore.

In all, more than 2/3 reached either Stella’s Point (the ‘first’ summit) or the top peak. I’m sure the extra day helped us adjust and I strongly suggest than anyone wishing to reach the top spends the extra money. I will try to write a review piece later on this month for BnA and I’ll link it up here.

Lessons of the day:
Everyone becomes human again after a good shower
